WavyTropics Workshop Summary

The WavyTropics workshop, held by the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics of the Republic of Indonesia (BMKG), brought together scientists, forecasters, and students from around the world. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical weather forecasting.

A. Participants and Structure

With 290 registered attendees, 70-130 participated in each live session. The WavyTropics workshop facilitated insightful discussions. For those unable to participate in the live sessions, recordings are available, ensuring that the valuable content can be accessed and reviewed at a later time. The daily schedule included an opening, weather briefing by Mr. Thierry Lefort, science talks by experts from various universities, coffee breaks, practical sessions, and Q&A sessions. The sessions started at 2 PM and concluded around 5:30 PM local Jakarta time.

B. Opening Ceremony

Dr. Beata Latos, serving as the host of the event, inaugurated the workshop with a warm welcome. The opening words were delivered by Dr. Agie Wandala from the host institution – BMKG and Dr. Kunio Yoneyama, representing the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) of the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP). WWRP is one of the three research programmes in the Science and Innovation Department of the World Meteorological Organization. The event received an endorsement from SSC WWRP, highlighting its significance in the meteorological community.

C. Daily Focus

The workshop covered diverse topics each day:

20.11.2023: Dr. Hanh Nguyen (Bureau of Meteorology) discussed Low Frequency Modes, followed by a practical session by Mr. Fadhlil Rizki Muhammad (University of Melbourne).

21.11.2023: Prof. Adrian Matthews (University of East Anglia) spoke on Convectively Coupled Equatorial Rossby Waves, with a practical session by Dr. Philippe Peyrillé (Météo-France).

22.11.2023: Dr. Natasha Senior (University of East Anglia) covered Convectively Coupled Equatorial Kelvin Waves, with a practical session by Dr. Dariusz Baranowski (Polish Academy of Sciences).

23.11.2023: Dr. Ida Pramuwardani (BMKG) discussed Mixed Rossby-Gravity Waves, followed by a practical session led by Dr. Muhamad Rezza Ferdiansyah (BMKG).

24.11.2023: Mr. Jeong-Yik Diong (Malaysian Meteorological Department) presented on the Interaction of waves with cold surges, and Dr. Donaldi Permana (BMKG) conducted the practical session.

D. Workshop Objectives

The workshop aimed to enhance participants' skills in estimating the impact of equatorial waves on precipitation and circulation patterns. The focus was on collaborative efforts to develop scenarios for short, medium-range, and subseasonal weather predictions.

E. Event Format

The workshop had a hybrid format, with participants attending either in person at BMKG Jakarta or remotely via Zoom. The sessions were open to the public with free registration, emphasizing inclusivity and knowledge-sharing.

F. Future Steps

Following the workshop, a comprehensive report is planned for release. Such report will include a guide for operational forecasting using equatorial waves. Recommendations for the scientific community and forecasters will be included, fostering ongoing collaboration and advancements in meteorological understanding and application.
